The history of the sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini:
Berninis sculpture depicts the moment when Apollo pursues Daphne, who transforms into a tree to escape his love. Through the work, Bernini manages to capture incredibly realistic movement of the two figures and the emotion each one emits. The sculpture has been considered one of the masterpieces of the Baroque style and one of the most important sculptures of the 17th century. The story of Apollo and Daphne has inspired many artists and continues to be a significant part of Greek mythology and cultural heritage.
The story of Apollo and Daphne is one of the most famous myths of ancient Greek mythology. According to the story, the god Apollo fell in love with the nymph Daphne, daughter of the river Peneus. However, Daphne did not want to dedicate her life to a god and ran away from him. When Apollo approached her, Daphne prayed to her father to make her invisible. Peneus transformed Daphne into a tree, leaving Apollo with only a branch from the tree. Apollo embraced the branch and called it "laurel" and decided to guard it forever. Thus, the branch of Daphnes tree became a symbol of immortality, love, and faith.
