    Sappho, also called

Sappho the Lesbian, was a Greek lyric poet from Lesvos, especially known from antiquity until today for her poetic work. Lesbian love has been associated with her name in modern times. Sappho is considered with her poetry, which was written in the Aeolian dialect, as the most important lyric poet of antiquity. The oldest surviving manuscripts, including Excerpt 2 preserved in a fragment of a vase, date to the 3rd century BC, and thus predate the Alexandrian edition. The last surviving copies of Sapphos poems that come directly from ancient times are written in code pages from the 6th and 7th centuries AD, and are certainly reproductions of ancient papyri lost today.
